Most of you know Samuel personally, which means you know what a special little guy he is. For those of you who do not know him personally, let me tell you a little about him.
Samuel is my hero. He is the strongest 4-year-old I know. His strength is measured by his courage, his determination, and his drive to live each day to the fullest despite the challenges he faces. Samuel has type I diabetes. This means that his pancreas does not make insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is necessary for life. Therefore, he MUST take insulin injections daily to survive. Right now, he takes 4 to 6 "shots" a day. He also has to prick his finger at least 10 times a day to keep a check on his blood sugar levels. And yet, he never complains.
Samuel was diagnosed with diabetes a few months before he turned 2 years old. Although he was barely talking at this point, he never questioned why he had to start taking shots and pricking his finger each day. I think it hurt me more because I had to "inflict" pain on my baby. Nonetheless, I knew first-hand how important it was to start immediately trying to regulate his blood sugar because I myself had been living with type 1 diabetes for 15 years. I also had witnessed the damage diabetes can cause to one's body from watching my daddy struggle to control the disease himself. This irreversable damage ultimately caused my daddy's death over 9 years ago.
Over the past several months, I have helped form a support group in Savannah for kids with diabetes through the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Our support group has organized the "Savannah Walk to Cure Diabetes" which is scheduled for this Saturday, June 25th at Daffin Park. All of the money we raise will go directly to the JDRF, which will be used to help find a cure for diabetes.
Please consider joining Samuel's team as either a walker (walk with Samuel on Saturday) and/or donating money to his team. Anything you are able to do will be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you for helping Samuel in his efforts to try to find a cure for diabetes.
Samuel's biggest fan,
Stacy
