Queen for the Cure

As some of you may know, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the 7th grade. Diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic meant that my pancreas could no longer produce the correct amount of insulin throughout my body and therefore the insulin, which is a hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood sugar, caused me too reach my blood sugar levels into the 600s (normal is between 75-150). For months I went without knowing what was going on to my body as I had excessive thirst & urination, loss of 30 pounds, nausea, and many other strange complications. When I was diagnosed I spent a week in the hospital and from then on I knew things were going to be tough.

Being a diabetic has brought about many responsibilities into my life from checking my blood sugar and watching my food intake to exercising and now using my insulin pump, instead of shots to regulate my sugars. It can be difficult, aggravating, and very overwhelming at times. Now almost 7 years later, I still have yet to allow my incurable disease to prevent me from living my life to the fullest :)

Last year I participated in a pageant and won the title for Miss South Carolina American Diabetes Association Overall Princess and raised $700 in total. I am working again towards raising money and awareness about type 1 diabetes. November is National American Diabetes Month- a time to shine a spotlight on a serious disease that leads to potentially life threatening complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and amputation. I ask you to PLEASE help me by making a minimum $1 donation, 100% proceeds go towards JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) to help diabetics like me, to one day have a cure.
