Hi Everyone!
OMG I am running the BOSTON MARATHON for juvenile diabetes!!!! I have looked into running Boston the last few years for the JDRF but they were never a sponsor. I made a promise to myself that if they ever were to become a sponsor I would run for them and run for my daughter Riley. Finally for the first time ever the BAA selected them as one of their charities for 2012. I sent in my application and lucky me, I am on the team and have a number!! As many of you know my almost 11 year old daughter was diagnosed shortly after her second birthday with Type 1 diabetes. Our lives were never the same. Its tough to explain the constant care she requires because for the most part she looks and acts like a "normal" tween would but the reality is that we care for her every moment of every day. I don't think I slept a full night for the first eight years after diagnosis. I still use a baby monitor to listen to her breathing patterns during the night. Riley went from insulin shots for the first six months to being placed on insulin pump technology before she turned three. That means she receives insulin via pump all throughout the day and when she has any carbohydrates she enters in "her numbers" so that the pump can deliver additional insulin. It sounds simple but her life is a constant battle to keep her blood sugar in the appropriate range. She pricks her arm eight times a day and has to have her pump site changed every 2-3 days. That means her getting a shot to her backside that stays there until we have to change the site. Over the past eight years she has had to deal with broken pumps, too many shots to count, a few seizures from low blood sugar, horrible stomach and head aches from high blood sugar levels, and one horrific trip to the ER when I honestly thought she would not be coming home. Not a day goes by without me praying for a cure in her lifetime. With all that she has had to deal with, only once has she ever asked why her. I really didn't have an answer except that I believe God knows how tough she is and that she would be the one with enough fight in her to handle it. No one should have to suffer through diabetes and any event like this that I can contribute to, to help keep progress moving I will gladly accept the challenge. Ive seen first hand the changes in technology over the last eight plus years and I know someday she will be free from this disease.
