Shopping and curing diabetes…two of our FAVORITE things! So if we found a way to combine them, we could have fun and help fund the best diabetes research in the world, all at the same time! SOLD! Across the country, happy shoppers have found a number of ways to make their passion pay. Here are some steps to creating a JDRF Shopportunity for your friends, family, and community!
The great thing about the Shopportunity is that you can just pick a span of time to hold it at your convenience. Fall or spring….Day or night… Weekend or weekday …. You choose what works best for YOU!
Just consider what type of event you want to have.
Some successful events have been:
Never go shopping without a list…and never hold a Shopportunity without a goal! We here at JDRF have learned that the best way to be successful in fundraising is to set a goal and shoot for it! Talk to your participating vendor about the kinds of results he or she has seen in the past…and then go even higher! JDRF families are known to be particularly passionate about our cause, and no matter what your Shopportunity is, they are sure to come out in force!
The nature of your event and how many people you are hoping to attend will help determine your logistical needs. But here are a few things to consider
Participants: What is the best way to recruit people for your event? You should definitely invite all of your friends and family (think holiday card list, address book, e-mail contacts, Facebook friends). Depending on the type of event, you may have groups already looking for places to participate (PTA’s, Facebook friends, church/synagogue groups, book clubs, civic organizations). Then consider a community appeal. Is there a community newspaper or mailer that you could list your event in? Will local business hang up a flyer? Put flyers in neighbors' mailboxes. Also remember the rest of the local diabetes community. Ask your endocrinologist to put something out to their patients, tell local support groups, involve school nurses and diabetes educators! Don’t forget about your child’s school – talk to their teacher, PTA, principal and PE teacher about involving the school.
Timing: Decide what time your event will start and finish, in conjunction with your participating retail partner. Allocate some time at the start of the event for a “thank you” to all of your participants and volunteers and at the end to wrap up the success of the experience!
Our online tools will not only make your work so much easier, but they will also help you to raise more money for diabetes research!
